Exhibition
Sound is always around us, yet we rarely take the time to truly listen.
Presented through the Aesthetic Incubation Program, a collaboration between Grand View Art Village and Miran Space, this project invites Japanese sound artist Nao Nishihara to Hsinpu, Hsinchu. Drawing on observations and recordings of the local environment, the artist encourages participants to rediscover the subtle soundscapes of everyday life through the body, objects, and their surroundings.
Rather than focusing on technique, the project is an invitation to slow down, listen closely, and experience how sound connects people, place, and memory.

○ 西原 尚 Nao Nishihara
Nao Nishihara works across sound art, performance, instrument making, and teaching, using sound as a central axis. Because sound is constantly present in everyday life, both of daily life and artistic practice possesses rich acoustic scenery, his ears are always open widely. He may be engaged in his activities as a way of sharing with others the fertile nuances of the sound world he perceives. He is also drawn to travel out of a desire to encounter new people, cultures, and customs. He has presented exhibitions and performances in various regions and countries, including Kagawa, Niigata, Venice, Tokyo, Armenia, Taiwan, New York, Poland, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Berlin, Russia, China, France, Tokushima, Miyagi, Okayama, Busan, the United Kingdom, and Belgrade. Born in Hiroshima in 1976, he serves as
a part-time lecturer teaching sound-related courses at Tokyo University of the Arts, Fukuyama University, and Yokohama National University. He is also a assistant professor at the University of Tokyo’s art school, Ars Nova.

Introduction
In this workshop, participants will create simple sound-making instruments using bamboo, a material deeply rooted in Taiwan’s everyday life and cultural memory. Beginning with a horizontal flute and a vertical flute, participants will explore how sound emerges through making, careful listening, and the relationship between the body, breath, and material.
Rather than simply crafting an instrument, the workshop invites participants to discover how bamboo gradually responds through shaping, testing, and refinement. If time allows, participants will also experiment with making a diagonal flute and a nose flute, exploring different ways of creating sound.

1:30–4:00 PM | Workshop
Guided by the artist, participants will explore how sound is created, transformed, and perceived through natural materials and bodily movement, while experiencing the relationship between sound and place.
4:00–4:30 PM | Artist Performance
Nao Nishihara will present a live improvised performance, inviting participants to observe, take part if they wish, and share their reflections on sound and listening.
4:30–5:00 PM | Sharing & Group Photo
The workshop concludes with an informal sharing session and a group photo.

Fee
NT$500 per person (includes all materials and tools. Participants may take their handmade instrument home.)
Language
The workshop will be conducted primarily in English and Japanese. Chinese assistance will be available when needed.
